Surgery leaves you unable to do yoga for 6 weeks – but fortunately I’ve still got my mind and my hands to roam free. Specifically, I’ve been thinking about mudras – positions of the hand that are often used in meditation or in yoga. They “seal in energy” from the body and create a visual language that we can use to tell ourselves (and others) our state of mind. That might sound a bit silly, but consider that our hands are our interfaces with the world in so many ways. With everything so overwhelming, why not use them to focus inwardly as well as control things outwardly? It makes sense that their position might help us focus just as much as our body position in our yoga asanas.
Incidentally, no one needs to tell me this, since I usually gesture with my hands so enthusiastically that dining companions continually fear for my water glasses. –
Traditional mudras are well worth learning, of course, but since my fandoms charge me and inspire me, I present here my favorite fandom mudras – followed by the elaborate mudras/hand motions of the musical Be More Chill. Try them out and see how it makes you feel in hands, body, and mind.
