The evolution of language is fascinating isn’t it?
In particular, I’m enjoying the recent new generation’s take on slang – which seems to involve taking normal, boring words and laying new meaning on top. It almost feels like a secret code that they’ve got going on. Something or someone is “basic” or “lit,” which sound simple enough, but actually there are a boatload of connotations to those in the know.
So naturally we lame moms must latch on to those words ASAP and take all of the fun out of them. So basic of us, right?! In particular, I’m enjoying the word “extra.” It’s like the original meaning but more so – over the top, excessive, dramatic, in many different ways. That can be good or bad, depending on your perspective, of course. What I can consider to be the sprinkles and whipped cream on the sundae of life might just seem too sweet for you. Sequins and feathers could be fabulous or gaudy. But with this new word “extra” comes a sort of shared judgement – same as for “basic.” We all kind of realize together that a person or a thing takes something to the next level, even if we might not agree on whether it should. That’s why I love language – when you label you understand, and when you understand, you can bond and build ideas.
Therefore I humbly present ways to be extra in yoga class, knowing that the extra in me supports the extra in you. You go out there and do you.
