The Cloaks (& Safe Places) of Fandom

May 4, 2018 by Fandom Yoga Leave a Comment

We all need our happy, safe spaces – both mental and physical. For those who love their fandoms, those spaces might even be imagined. It’s lovely just to picture yourself in the TARDIS, on the Enterprise, or in Hogwarts.

There may be no space more snug, however, than the kind that you physically can wear. Our heroes often wear a kind of cloak, which is part of their persona, a functional extension of self. A cloak can serve many purposes, including making one look bad-ass. But it can also define your own little personal base camp. You can center yourself when inside of it, and then throw it off dramatically when it’s time to kick some Sith butt.

One yoga term you might hear is “shala,” or a safe, possibly sacred space that you can be in to practice your yoga – which of course is how you connect with the other, in any form. In a way, it seems to me that a cloak is like a portable, wearable shala. (This completely justifies me buying the 13th Doctor’s cool new trench coat, right?!) I know I would like to take the yoga studio vibe with me wherever I go.

Check out some of the very best cloaks of fandom, IMHO…

Where to start?

Wondering what this has to do with yoga? Yoga means “to join” – and here I join together ideas from different fandoms of many kinds, including, of course, yoga!

Check out where yoga can take you. Or how you could start yoga with a body that might betray your love of sitting, reading, and watching?
